My first son was diagnosed with Severe Autism and ADHD at age two. It was all very new and overwhelming! We began working with specialist and teachers to understand a new world of having someone you love struggle and not fully understand how to help them; the doctors said he would be non-verbal. I wouldn't accept that! There were little resources for our family when we began, and therapy offices were booked for two years solid or they were extremely out of our price range for our middle income. I started to meet other parents that were going thru the same struggles and knew immediately we all needed to help each other in one way or another. It takes a village to help these children grow!
I started reading and learning more by taking college classes with my husband. We began to teach our son at home in addition to what he was taught at school, and it has made all the difference in his life. Many people have come together to help us, educate us, and guide us through our family's troubles, and we owe a big thank you to our community and God for giving us this opportunity. I want to pay it forward for the help our family has received, I want to give back to my community by building these services to help others during their struggle.
